"Volunteerism is an act of heroism on a grand scale. And it matters profoundly. It does more than help people beat the odds; it changes the odds."** Volunteerism refers to an act involving a wide range of activities, including traditional forms of mutual aid and developmental interventions that provides an enabling and empowering environment both on the part of the beneficiary receiving, and the volunteer rendering the act, undertaken for reasons arising from socio-developmental, business or corporate orientation, commitment or conviction for the attainment of the public good and where monetary and other incentives or reward are not the primary motivating factors. In the Philippines, volunteerism is more popularly known as “Bayanihan” which translates into “getting into the act of helping, being a hero for the community.” This site aims to serve as a collection of volunteer opportunities, links to organizations, and related resources for the interested Pinoy volunteer. * Mahatma Gandhi | ** Former US Pres. We believe that when indigent children develop an interest in reading, they will begin to read regularly and consequently they will become good readers. You're welcome to arrive at around 6:30 p.m. but not later than 7:30 p.m. (Volunteers will not be accepted after 7:30 p.m.)Volunteer Night is a great opportunity to meet up with other activists, but more significantly, we get loads of work done—such as stuffing envelopes with copies of Animal Timesmagazine for distribution to celebrities, sending letters to various companies that are abusing animals, doing online research, making phone calls, and more. Last month, Volunteer Night brought volunteers together to accomplish a variety of tasks, including preparing our foie gras mailing, which involved creating handwritten letters asking several restaurants to stop serving foie gras. Hundreds of letters have now been mailed to those restaurants! In addition, you'll get to know PETA and get updates on campaign news and projects from the past month. So come and make new friends and help animals! Our office is located at Unit 706, Fedman Suites, 199 Salcedo St., Makati. We're just a few steps away from Makati Medical Center. If you have any questions about Volunteer Night, please feel free to SMS Rochelle at 0920-4974679 or e-mail her at RochelleR@PETAAsiaPacific.com. You can also reach us at (02) 817-5292 or (02) 818-3668 during office hours. Thank you for everything that you do for animals. We hope to see you on Wednesday! Hello Everyone :) It's only a few weeks before Christmas. I'd like to invite you to our project (am running it with other friends) If its not too much to ask if you can share our blessings.
See details of the project below. We are still finalizing delivery and pick-up points.
THE OUT-OF-THE-BOX PROJECT
THE MISSION: To bring help, hope and happiness to Filipino children and their families who are victims of various calamities
THE TARGET: At least 1,000 shoeboxes filled with treats delivered to 1,000 children and their families (The MORE shoeboxes, the MERRIER! So let's keep counting beyond 1,000 shoeboxes!)
THE DESTINATION: Evacuation Center in Isabela
THE TIMEFRAME:13 November - 13 December 2010 (Packing + delivery of Merry Christmas Shoeboxes)
THE PROJECT: The OUT-OF-THE-BOX PROJECT is a private-public partnership designed to bring help, hope and happiness to Filipino children and their families in the midst of adversity. Through the generosity and kindness of private citizens and organizations, recycled shoeboxes are filled with care goodies then turned over to the Civilian Relations Service (CRS) – Armed Forces of the Philippines who shall ensure the secure and safe delivery to the intended beneficiaries in evacuation centers and public schools as often as necessary.
THE MECHANICS : HOW TO PACK YOUR SHOEBOX in 3 easy steps:
- Find an empty shoebox; if you can, wrap the lid and the box separately in recycled newspaper or colorful gift wrappers, and we will take care of tying the ribbon; pls. make sure your box is open for safety and security inspection;
- Decide on what type of care goodies you'd like to share (such as books, toys, school supplies, toothbrushes, soap, towels, educational games, etc.) and fill in the packing list; we encourage NEW items, though we will accept used but functioning items. Soon as you contact us for a pledge, we shall send you a Pledge Form and Packing List;
- Fill in the shoebox with your gifts; please DO NOT wrap items individually and do not include:
- any kind of medicines
- perishable food items
- books /toys that promote violence (guns, knives, blades, violent games, adult books, etc.)
WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO : - inspect the shoeboxes and remove items that may cause potential harm to the recipient
- split large shoeboxes and divide the contents into several care packages
- re-donate / dispose the items that may have to be removed from the shoebox
For more details or if you wish to arrange for pick-up/delivery points, pls. contact me in the meantime:
NOTE:
- We suggest a minimum of at least 6-10 items per shoebox; Peso value and contents vary but we recommend each box be worth around PhP50.00 – 150.00 / box.
- We accept in-kind donations, which shall be properly accounted for and provided with an acknowledgment receipt.
- Donations from outside the Philippines are welcome! Please coordinate with us for shipment details; we may be reached anytime via e-mail, FB, landline, fax, mobile, text, snail mail.
- You are most welcome to join us deliver the goods during our Shoebox Sorties! And if your goodies are too large to fit in a shoebox, those are most welcome too! : )

Not many of you know that most of the inmates at QC Jail are innocent. They are awaiting their trials and because of our slow justice system, sometimes they stay there for more years than their crime calls for.
The jail which is built for 800 now holds a little less than 3000. We have been going there for little less than two years, once a week, as part of the Restorative Justice Ministry of the Cubao Archdiocese. We bring merienda, soap (which they badly need!), and tell them they are not forgotten. We try to encourage them, give them hope through the Word of God.
For Christmas, we are hoping to give gift bags to at least 300 prisoners. If you would like to help, please send donations (may be soap, detergent, cookies, soup, rice, men's clothing, towels, toys or books for their children, canned goods) to any papemelroti branch (see locations below). Any little bit helps!
Would appreciate if you can pass this message to those you think would look kindly upon prisoners!
Drop off your donations at any of the following Papemelroti branches: 91 Roces Ave., QC Branches: Megamall (Lower Ground near Fast food) SM City North Edsa (near SM Supermarket) Glorietta 3 (at the side of Rustans) Sta Lucia East Grand mall (2nd floor) SM Fairview (near national) SM Sta Mesa (2nd flr) Gateway (near Goldilocks) Ali mall (Ground, near Gerry's Grill) SM San Lazaro (near BDO) SM Manila Robinsons Place Manila SM Pampanga (annex) SM Clark

Hello everyone, Just want to let you know that Hands On Manila is in need of volunteers for our Hands On Schools-Galing Mo Kid! (HOS-GMK) project and I’d like to ask your assistance to possibly spread the word. Our HOS-GMK is looking for volunteers as 1) mentors to elementary school students (grade 4-6) in 3 public schools in Metro Manila. The mentors are requested to commit 4 consecutive Saturdays, with 2 hour session with the kids. There are modules to follow so mentoring is less complicated and 2) interviewers for our GMK impact evaluation research (to interview students, teachers, donors, mentors and parents who have been recipients of the program). This is our 4th year with GMK so we are evaluating the past 3 years (our first batch recipients have graduated and some of them have been lucky to be the recipients of high school scholarships at Southridge). All the interview instruments are ready and has been pre-tested, all we need now are people to do the interview ( a training will be provided before they go on field). If there’s someone you know that would love to do this kind of volunteering, please let us know. They can reach us at 8437044, 3866521 or 4737458. If I am not around, they can look for Carmela “Miel” David, our Project Officer for the HOS-GMK program. Hoping for your help. Thanks mucho! Helen

(from an email) November 11, 2009 Dear Friends, Warm Greetings! In the context of the recent onslaught of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng and the ongoing global climate change negotiations, Climex sees the critical importance of immediately holding a Peoples’ Caucus –a series of forums and caucuses, that aims to bring together basic sectors and grassroots organization to discuss the impacts, immediate recovery, government responses, and the larger issues of financing and development. Climate Exchange or Climex is a movement of basic sectors and grassroots organizations, the marginalized and most vulnerable, including women, indigenous peoples, fisherfolks, farmers and rural communities, forest communities, formal and informal workers ,environmental groups, migrants, urban poor, and others. It aims to put these sectors at the center of the climate and development agenda and debates. Hence, Peoples’ Caucus will be conducted on a two part series based on the following specific objectives: * To serve as a venue for discussing a common framework and building of unities on broader issues of climate change and development, including specific issues on- rehabilitation/ reconstruction, adaptation, mitigation, financing, technology, and other key climate issues; * To create synergy of platforms and initiatives among sectors and grassroots communities most vulnerable and affected by climate change, and * To come up with a Common Peoples’ Agenda on Climate Change and Development In this regard, we would like to invite you and participate in the First Part of the Peoples Caucus on November 17 (Tuesday), from 8:15 AM until 5:00 PM, at the Bulwagang Tandang Sora, third floor, College of Social Work and Community Development (CSWCD), at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. Specifically, the activity aims to discuss critical issues concerning climate change and development, and establishing the framework and unities which will aid us in the process of defining our positions and agenda. Thematic caucuses will immediately follow after the November 17 activity for the agenda building. For more information, please call tel. nos. 924-6399 and 921-1985 and look for Khevin Yu (Climex Secretariat) or send an email through khevinyu@gmail.com.
